Particiants will spend time grooming our rescued horses in each session (9/10, 9/17, 9/24, and 10/1). Grooming is beneficial for many reasons. The act of grooming a horse has proven to have a soothing effect on people and can actually lower your blood pressure. Various grooming tools are used in a specific order which promotes learning and following directions. While grooming, a child will feel different textures such as dust, hair, and the grooming tools. Forming positive associations with new sensory stimuli can be highly beneficial to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and can set them up to better handle real life situations in the future. Educational activities will occur in each session. Small lessons are presented (no more than 15 minutes long) followed by a related activity. Activities will often include matching activities, as well as simple multi-step projects. These activities will help prepare children for school while maintaining interesting themes each week. The ratio of children to instructors is 2:1.
